Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive San Jose. Arrival day. There are no planned activities, so you may arrive at any time and spend the day at your leisure.
Days 2-3: Tortuguero This morning we make our way east overland and by boat through beautiful canals to the small town of Tortuguero on the Caribbean Sea, an important nesting area for Green and Leatherback sea turtles. This is a great base for walking and exploring, with plenty of opportunity to see the many birds and wildlife.
Days 4-6: La Fortuna / Arenal. A 5 hour van and boat trip takes us to La Fortuna, near the base of the spectacular Arenal Volcano. We stay near to the Tabacon Hot Springs, fed by sources coming directly from the nearby active volcano. Visit the crocodile zoo, try river rafting, go horseback riding, or take a guided walk through the solid lava fields. Soak and relax in the hot springs of Tabacon while you enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery.
Days 7-9: Monteverde. From La Fortuna we ascend into the cool, misty mountain air of the Monteverde cloud forest. Here we spend a couple of days exploring the town and the Forest Reserve, truly a bird lover's paradise. We tour a local coffee plantation learning how the beans are harvested. Other optional activities include the Sky Walk, a butterfly garden, and a fantastic canopy zip-line tour!
Days 10-12: Quepos / Manuel Antonio National ParkThe picturesque town of Quepos is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the white sand beaches and warm turquoise waters that the Pacific coast is known for. Take your pick of swimming, fishing, kayaking, boogie boarding, sailing or surfing. Not far away, Manuel Antonio National Park offers excellent hiking, spectacular views, and abundant wildlife viewing. A sunset sail is included where you can snorkel, swim, and try to spot dolphins!
