One of our favourite itineraries, this journey from Lima to La Paz is an excellent introduction to the
highlights of the Inca Civilisation including the Nazca Lines, Cuzco, Machu Picchu and, of course,
Lake Titicaca.
Our journey starts in Lima which over the last decade has been transformed into a vibrant and exciting capital
city, worthy of the country. From here you travel down the Pan-American Highway to Ica, from where you
fly over the mysterious Nazca Lines. It is still not clear why they were built and the fact that they can only be
properly viewed from the air adds to their enigma.
We then travel across to Cuzco, the capital of the old Inca Empire. This is a splendid city, in the Spanish Colonial
style, build upon Inca foundations. For a culture that did not yet have the wheel, they did a pretty good
job at moving mountains.
Cuzco is also our base from which to reach the Sacred Valley of the Incas and,
of course, Machu Picchu, the most famous Inca site in Latin America.
After returning to Cuzco we travel by railway up to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The journey to
Copacabana, then by hydrofoil to the Isla del Sol and then onward to La Paz is stunning. The road trip to
La Paz is an unforgettable experience. By this time you should be well-acclimatized - La Paz is
one of the highest cities in the world and the air is thin. It is a fascinating place and makes a breathtaking
end to our tour.
