Brazilian Pantanal, tapir

Tour: Brazilian Adventure

Our two week itinerary is designed to appeal to those who are interested in the natural world that Brazil has to offer, starting in the magnificent setting of Rio de Janeiro. From Rio you fly to the Iguassu Falls before continuing to the Pantanal for three days of wildlife spotting in the vast wetlands.

The Pantanal wetlands area is larger than France, one of the world's great animal reserves and home to more than 600 species of birds. It is considered to be the best place in Brazil to view wildlife, very different to the dense jungle, this region of flat savannah has more open spaces and far fewer trees. This makes it easier to see wildlife, including jaguar, caiman, anaconda, anteater, capybara and tapir, monkey and giant otter. Explore the area by jeep or on horse back and stay at Refugio Ecologico Caimain, a rustic lodge in the heart of the Pantanal where all wildlife tours and full board are included. The region is seasonally flooded and the best time of year to visit is the dry season, June to October.

The itinerary ends at the 17th century fishing village of Paraty, four hours drive south from Rio, down the Costa Verde. As well as enjoying the charming colonial atmosphere of the town, you can visit lovely nearby islands with white sand beaches by boat, which leave the harbour frequently each day. A few days relaxing here is highly recommended. Stay at the Pousada Porto Pardieiro, situated in the historic centre of Paraty in a charming colonial mansion, with swimming pool and tropical gardens.
