The Panama Canal
Over 22,000 lives were lost in the construction of the Panama Canal. It was owned and operated by the US up until 1999 and is now in the hands of the Panamanians.
You can visit the Canal and watch the cruise liners go though from the Visitors Centre or even travel along the Canal yourself, by doing a partial or full Ocean to Ocean transit.
The full transit is quite an experience and takes 10 hours in total but can only be done on certain dates.
