Oaxaca

Oaxaca is a delightful mix of the colonial, the indigenous and the ancient, with its fine Spanish buildings and churches, its markets, local crafts and numerous fiestas and the archaeological site of Monte Alban. The townsfolk speak their own language and their market is one of the most colourful in Mexico.

The ruins of Monte Alban, once the sacred capital of the Zapotecs, overlook the town and make for a fascinating visit. It is also worth visiting Mitla, an archaeological site of the Mixtecs.
