Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, is a very pleasant place to spend a few days, it has a charming colonial centre with churches and museums and a very agreeable climate. The surrounding valleys with their colonial history provide an interesting contrast to the Caribbean beaches for which Honduras is best known. Take the time to visit the nearby colonial mining villages which attest to the capital’s former glory as a silver mining centre. There are excellent hikes and trails in the cloud forest of La Tigre National Park which is a very accessible 11 km from the city.

| Colonial Mining Towns - Valle de Angeles and Santa Lucia | |
| These two former mining towns, just outside Tegucigalpa, give an insight into the history of the area. During colonial times the mountains around the region were mined for silver and so were once very important centres for the Spanish. Valle de Angeles retains its colonial atmosphere and is the best place in the country to buy handicrafts, leather goods, textiles and musical instruments from all over Honduras. Santa Lucia is surrounded by pine forests and is famed for its beautiful colonial church which houses the Black Christ donated by Phillip II of Spain in 1592. | |
