Mundo Maya

Whilst tools dating from 9000 BC have been found in the Guatemala Highlands, it wasn't until around 1500 BC that the Mayas emerged to dominate Central America. By 300 AD their cities were more advanced than anywhere in Europe and they already had good knowledge of astronomy and a very sophisticated calendar: a 365 day year operates within a cycle of 5128 years known as the long count. The current cycle is due to end on 10 December 2012.
