Antigua
Antigua is a haven of tranquility in an otherwise bustling
country, about an hour and a half by road from Guatemala City.
Once the capital of the whole of Cental America, the small town today
retains the beauty of its colonial heritage in its buildings and cobbled
streets, together with a relaxed atmosphere and lively cafe life.
It is the cultural and artistic centre of Guatemala and a very attractive place with its beautiful old buildings surrounded by volcanoes.
If you have the time it's also a good place to pick up a quick Spanish course in one of its many language schools, lasting from one-week to longer.
Good hotels and restaurants complete the scene.

Holy week in Antigua
Spending Holy Week in Antigua is quite an experience - many consider it to be the biggest and most colourful and extravagant Easter Celebration in Latin America. This week-long event starts with processions on Palm Sunday continuing through to the main event on Good Friday, when the cobbled streets are carpeted in spectacular patterns of coloured sawdust and flowers whilst images of Christ and the Cross are carried shoulder high on huge platforms to the accompaniment of sombre dirges and clouds of incense. Hotels in Antigua often charge extra and fill up months in advance, so book early for this impressive event.
