San Jose
San Jose is right in the heart of the country, a lively city and a good base for a couple of days to visit nearby
attractions such as Poas Volcano or the Aerial Tram (see further down).

Day Trips from San Jose
Excursions into the area surrounding San Jose are very rewarding.
The Parque Nacional Poas Volcano is only 25 miles from the capital and has well maintained trails through dwarf cloudforest, rich
in wildflowers, ferns and bromelaids. The most impressive sight is from above the enormous crater, currently
filled with turquoise water and bubbling sulphurous gases.
Another favourite is the rainforest aerial tram, a series of cable
cars traversing the tops of the rainforest providing eye-level views. The Orosi Valley offers spectacular scenery,
nearby visit the wonderful collection of orchids at the
Lancaster Gardens or do some shopping in the arts and crafts village of Sarchi.
