Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs

Arenal Volcano lay dormant until July 1968, when huge explosions triggered lava flows, and it has remained active ever since. It has a perfect conical shape, and its degree of activity varies from week to week, however if you go on a night walk, on a clear night and at a safe distance you can usually see red-hot lava flowing and incandescent rocks jumping around the cone.

Arenal volcano also provides the heat for nearby Tabacon's therapeutic thermal waters. Stay at the Tabacon Hot Springs Resort, that lies at the foot of the Arenal's impressive cone. It has lovely gardens, a good restaurant and offers mudpacks and massages. Take a natural sauna beneath the waterfalls or a soak in warm mineral pools.
