Sugarloaf

Sugarloaf

It was shortly after the Battle of Waterloo that a British woman became the first person to scale Sugarloaf Mountain. When she got to the top she planted the Union Flag (the way you do).

Nowadays it is rather easier to get there: cable cars take you from the foot of Urca Mountain to the top of Sugarloaf. (NB. Flags optional).

The first cable cars were German and started operating in 1913; the current ones are Italian and were installed in 1972.
