At an altitude of 3800m, Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world and is one of the highlights of any trip to Bolivia. It affords some stunning scenery with a backdrop of the Andes mountain range and straddles both Bolivia and Peru. Many people like to cross the lake as a means of getting between the two countries.
On Lake Titicaca you find various inhabited islands, including the Islands of the Sun and Moon from which, according to the legend, the Inca civilisation emerged a thousand years ago. Trips to the islands to see the inca ruins can be taken either from the lakeshore town of Copacabana or on-route to Puno on the Peruvian border.
