This pleasant colonial city is known as "La Ciudad Blanca" because of its whitewashed buildings and is considered by many to be the administrative capital of Bolivia, still housing the Supreme Court. It has a more relaxed atmosphere than La Paz and has only one tenth of its population.
The centre of the city has been preserved as a classic Spanish colonial town with many buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries such as the Casa de la Libertad, the Cathedral and one of the earliest South American universities founded in 1624.
There are many interesting trips you can make using Sucre as a starting point, as you can see on this page. It also combines well with the mining city of Potosi, about 3 hours away by road. (See our Potosi page).

Hacienda La Candelaria:
A three hour drive from Sucre through the rolling hills and tiny villages of rural Bolivia brings you to the 200 year old Hacienda La Candelaria, which has been transformed into a simple guest house. The emphasis on a stay at this hacienda is an authentic local experience rather than a luxury stay. It is a rustic adobe-brick hacienda built around an impressive court-yard, with limited electricity and no hot running water, but with plenty of atmosphere.
Visit the Hacienda's grain storage rooms, orchards, private chapel and unique native museum.
The region is famous for its hand-made textile production and you can see demonstrations and workshops on local weaving styles, traditional cooking, dance performances as well as walks to neighbouring villages and pre-Inca sites. You will see traditional meals prepared over a simple wood stove and dinner is by candle light.
Our two day / one night trip to Hacienda La Candelaria, starting and finishing in Sucre, includes a visit to the Tarabuco Sunday market (see above).
