Macaws in Madidi National Park

Madidi National Park

Madidi National Park in Northwestern Bolivia is one of the most bio-diverse of all the protected regions in the world. Including within its boundaries the snowy peaks of the Cordillera Apolobamba down through cloud and dry forest, savannahs and pampas to the steaming tropical jungle of the Amazon Basin, the park's 4,500 acres encompass an incredible diversity of flora and fauna.

We recommend you stay at the Chalalan Ecolodge, one of Bolivia's most successful ecotourism projects. It is accessed by dug-out canoe, 5 hours from Rurrenabaque, and was founded by the local community. The thatched cabins are surrounded by primary forest, made of forest materials and use solar energy. The Lodge sits on the edge of Chalan Lake and activities include wildlife spotting and bird-watching, guided and self-guided trails and river and lake expeditions. The Lake is an ideal habitat for monkeys, caiman, turtles, macaws, hoatzin, and a variety of reptiles, whilst the park is said to have a healthy population of jaguar and puma.

Noel Kempf Mercado National Park

The Noel Kempf Mercado National Park in the extreme northeast of the country, nearest town is Santa Cruz, spans over 3.7 million acres in one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world, encompassing 7 different types of ecosystem. Due to its remote location you have a good chance of seeing undisturbed wild-life here, of which there are 620 species of birds and 130 species of mammals, however this also makes it harder to get to. You can fly from Santa Cruz by special charter aircraft straight to the Flor de Oro Lodge for a 3 night stay or a cheaper opption is to travel for a day by road (dry season only) for a five night trip based at the Los Fierros Lodge.

Please contact us for more information on costs and details for this fascinating, less visited area of Bolivia.
