Mount Illimani, towering over La Paz

La Paz

La Paz, built within a steep bowl-shaped canyon and ringed by mountains, never fails to impress. The first glimpse of the city from above, having landed at the highest airport in the world at 4,000m, is awesome. At dusk the city lights are best appreciated from the rooftop bar or restaurant of one of the top hotels.

The Indian women wearing traditional dress in the local markets are fascinating. There is a "Witches Market" full of bizzare wares, whilst a visit to one of the fine museums or to a local "peña" to hear traditional folkloric music are both enjoyable excursions.

N.B. owing to the high altitude of La Paz, most people experience altitude sickness to varying degrees during the first 24 hours, while their bodies acclimatise. Please see our section on Altitude in the Bolivia Country Information section.
