Toledo District

This little-known and unexplored area is just beginning to be discovered by those who want to get right off the beaten track. It is an area of pristine jungle with excellent birdwatching and wildlife spotting opportuinties. A canoe ride along the Rio Grande is a must and there are some excellent trails to follow.

Just a mile from Punta Gorda are the ruins of Lubaantun which provide a good introduction to the Mayas for a first-time visitor. Conspiracy theorists will be interested to note that it was here that the Crystal Skull was found in 1924.
