Chaa Creek

San Ignacio, Cayo District

Just a short distance from the Guatemalan border, making a day trip to Tikal that little bit easier, the San Ignacio area has been described as an open air classroom: guides will tell you about river systems, exotic birds, butterflies, medicinal plants and Mayan ruins. A trip down the Macal River, through the lush forest landscape, is a must.



The Lodge at Chaa Creek 20 thatched cottages within a private reserve of 330 acres, high on the banks of the Macal River in the Cayo district. This is an ideal place to break the journey on the way to (or from) the Tikal ruins in Guatemala. The Chaa Creek butterfly farm is nearby and Natural History Centre is a short walk away. Riding, canoeing, mountain biking and whitewater rafting are all offered; for the less energetic there are trails to follow. Highly recommended.
