Orange Walk District

This is one of the most extraordinary areas of Belize, a curious mixture of Chinese, Maya, Spanish and Hindu influences, with a strong Mennonite presence. Jaguars, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarundi are all on the prowl here and crocodiles bask along the New River. Cow foot soup is a speciality (not suitable for vegetarians!).

Chan Chich Lodge Great for bird-watching, the Chan Chich Lodge nestles within an ancient Maya Plaza, surrounded by protected rainforest. The lodge offers 12 thatched cabanas with twin beds, private bathroom and a veranda. There are nine miles of marked trails to follow and a range of excursions can be booked locally.
